    Mulled Mocktail

No brunch is complete without a special drink to sip and savour. This spiced mocktail is the perfect libation to warm up with on a cold wintery morning. If you are in the mood to imbibe, a splash of brandy or Cointreau would do nicely here.

    Mull it over

Feel free to play with the mulling spices you use in this drink. Traditionally mulled drinks contain a spice blend consisting of cinnamon, cloves, allspice, and nutmeg. Try adding some fennel seed, cardamom, or ginger if you’re feeling adventurous.

      Ingredients

      • 4 cups (1 L) unsweetened pomegranate juice
      • 2 cups (500 mL) unfiltered apple cider
      • 1/2 cup (125 mL) freshly squeezed orange juice
      • 1 large orange, sliced into rounds, plus extra for garnish
      • 5 whole cloves
      • 3 cinnamon sticks, each about 3 inches (8 cm) long
      • 2 star anise
      • 1/4 tsp (1 mL) whole peppercorns

      Directions

      01

To large saucepan, add all ingredients and, while stirring frequently, bring to a hard simmer over medium-high heat. Turn heat to low and allow mixture to simmer gently for 30 minutes. Remove saucepan from heat and strain mulled juice into heatproof bowl or pitcher. Discard solids.

      02

To serve, divide mulled mocktail among mugs and garnish with an additional orange slice, if desired. Serve while hot.

      03

Any leftover mulled mocktail may be refrigerated for up to 4 days and reheated gently before serving.
