#2013alive: Look Ahead - Go Green Indoors!

It’s time to look ahead to week 4 of June #alive2013, when we head inside to bring nature into our homes.

This week for June’s 12 Months of Wellness, we flexed our green thumbs by planting some greenery wherever we could—in a community plot, in a container on our patios, or in our own backyards. Now that Friday’s here, it’s time to look ahead to next week, when we’ll be bringing nature indoors.

Having a plant on your work desk or a living room table is far more than a decorative statement. While we all know that plants produce oxygen, it turns out that they can also clean the air of CO2 and various volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as benzene, toluene, and formaldehyde.

Prep for next week

Feeling ambitious for next week’s goal? Then the weekend is a perfect time to get a head start.

  • Make way! Prepare a space for your new indoor garden by finding a place such as a countertop or a windowsill that gets plenty of sunlight. If you have children or pets, make sure that it’s high enough up to keep your plants safe from little fingers, curious cats, or wagging tails.
  • Do your research. New green thumbs or forgetful gardeners may want to consider finding a houseplant that’s easy to grow and resilient enough to forgive infrequent watering. Parents and pet owners should be particularly vigilant to ensure that their green option is not harmful to young children or furry friends.
