We've heard a lot about the heart-health benefits of eating fatty fish such as salmon, which contain omega-3 fatty acids.
But a Science study published in January 2004 suggests that some types of salmon are so contaminated with toxic chemicals that they should only be eaten once or twice a month. Farmed salmon had significantly higher levels of contaminants than wild salmon from BC or Alaska. Chemicals are highly concentrated in the farmed salmon because their feed, fishmeal made from ground fish, has higher levels than the diet of wild salmon, which is made up of a variety of aquatic organisms.
The Science study advises that wild pink and chum salmon, for example, are safe to eat four to eight times per month. Ask your fish vendor whether the salmon you're buying is farmed or wild before you make your catch of the day.
