A study in the July 2003 issue of Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise has good news for diabetes sufferers who have lost sensation in their feet. Findings conclude that such people are not at increased risk of foot ulcers from weight-bearing activities like walking. The two-year study of 400 subjects with diabetes and prior history of foot ulcers showed that standing and walking for long periods of time put active participants at 80-percent less risk of developing foot ulcers than those who were least active. This is more positive reinforcement for diabetics to choose walking as a means of helping manage their disease and enhance cardiovascular health.
