Snoring is as pesky as a buzzing mosquito-only a good swat doesn't make the problem go away for good! A new poll on sleeping habits by the US-based National Sleep Foundation found that 37 per cent of people said they snore frequently. That's a lot of sleepless nights, which can contribute to bad moods, short tempers and fatigue-related overeating, researchers discovered.

Snoring occurs when the breathing passages are slightly obstructed. The problem can develop with colds, allergies or nasal polyps and is related to obesity, smoking and alcohol. Men snore more often than women.

If snoring keeps you up at night, try this essential oil blend, which, according to alive assistant editor and certified aromatherapist Wendy Bone, helps to relax and clear the nasal passages and open the airways:

  • 16 drops cajeput
  • 16 drops myrtle
  • 12 drops marjoram
  • 3 drops pure chamomile
  • 12 drops petitgrain
  • 16 drops lavender

Mix essential oils in your choice of carrier oil in a 120-millilitre glass bottle. Rub nightly on the bridge of the nose and between the brows, where the sinus passages are located. Alternatively, make a spray by adding the essential oils to pure water in the same 120-ml pump glass bottle. Shake well. Close your eyes when spritzing.
