Irish organic groups have asked the Irish department of agriculture to set organic standards which exceed the European Union minimum. But the department wants to scrap current organic standards for more lax ones and now faces possible legal action from one of the groups. It must also answer questions from a joint parliamentary committee.
Lowering standards would increase the number of organic farmers and bring more foreign currency into the country. The Irish agriculture authority wants 30,000 cattle farmers to go organic in the next five years.
