Handcrafted Aftershaves

We use aftershaves because they smell good and are beneficial to the skin. However, commercial brands often contain harsh chemicals and synthetic perfumes. They can't compete with the wholesome fragrance and healing properties of natural ingredients.

Making your own is easy, economical and allows you the opportunity to wear a scent that is as unique as you are. It's as simple as soaking herbs and essential oils in an alcohol base to form a tincture. Vodka, rum, or witch hazel all provide ideal bases. Herbs such as rosemary, lavender, sage and coriander are not only fragrant, but are known to have healing properties. Citrus peels, spices such as cinnamon and cloves and your favourite essential oils make excellent additions to homemade aftershave.

Create your own recipies by adding favourite herbs and oils to any of the recommended bases or try the following recipes good for both men and women.

Coriander Aftershave

This simple recipe has a delicate and refreshing orange scent. The coriander soothes and heals the skin and the honey moisturizes and works as an antiseptic.

1/4 cup (60 g) coriander seed
1 Tbsp (15 ml) honey
2 cups (1/2 litre) water
1 Tbsp (15 ml) witch hazel

Simmer the ingredients over low heat for 20 minutes and then let cool completely. Add the witch hazel and strain into bottles. This lotion lasts longer and is especially refreshing when kept refrigerated.

Aloe Vera and Peppermint Cooler

This recipe is wonderful on either the face or the legs. The aloe vera and peppermint have a distinctively cooling effect on the skin and help heal any nicks or scrapes.

1/2 cup (125 ml) pure aloe vera gel
1 Tbsp (15 ml) water
1 Tbsp (15 ml) overproof vodka
1 Tbsp (15 ml) witch hazel
5 drops essential oil of peppermint

Blend and pour your creations into decorative jars to transform them into beautiful and very personal gifts.
