Diabetes-Friendly Desserts

People with diabetes can still enjoy an occassional treat, such as the following diabetes dessert recipes which are low in fat and sugar free and high in fibre.

Many seem to believe that people with diabetes must abandon desserts for good. Actually, they can enjoy an occasional sweet treat, especially if it’s nutritious. The following recipes are low in fat and sugar and high in fibre. Don’t let that scare you away though—they’re delicious and perfect for serving during the holidays.

Diabetes: the do and the don’t

Sharon Zeiler, RD, is senior manager of Diabetes Education and Nutrition at the Canadian Diabetes Association. She offers the following tips about dessert for people with diabetes and those at risk for diabetes:

  • Do have vitamin-rich fruit for dessert.
  • Do keep fats to a minimum.
  • Do eat desserts with high-fibre content.
  • Don’t eat huge portions of dessert.
  • Don’t deprive yourself of dessert; fit it into your meal plan.
  • Don’t wait to start eating healthy if you’re at risk for diabetes—do it now!
