Q: I’ve heard that garlic is healthy, but what exactly is aged garlic extract?

A: To make AGE, cleaned and sliced garlic cloves are stored in stainless steel tanks and naturally aged, without heating, for up to 20 months. This aging process allows certain nutrients to convert into an active form. This bioconversion changes unstable organosulphur compounds (that can cause stomach upset with increased consumption) into milder and more effective compounds like S-allylcysteine and S-allylmercaptocysteine and an odourless aged garlic extract.

AGE benefits heart health through its help in reducing three risk factors that can increase the risk of heart disease: high blood pressure, high LDL (bad) cholesterol levels, and overall inflammation levels.

  • AGE reduces blood pressure by enhancing nitric oxide levels which are vasodilatory (opening blood vessels). This mechanism relaxes the blood vessels and allows the blood to flow smoothly through the vessels, reducing blood pressure.
  • AGE has been shown, through a mechanism very similar to that of statins, to reduce total and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels in the blood by as much as 10 percent for people who take it for at least two weeks.
  • AGE reduces overall inflammation levels in the body by being a potent specific antioxidant for the blood vessels, making the blood vessels more elastic, thereby preventing damage and increasing circulation.

In addition to heart health benefits, AGE may also enhance the immune system. AGE, when taken daily, may help reduce cold and flu symptom severity, the number of symptoms, and also decrease the number of days you perform at less than your best due to illness.
