Before considering remedies, know that frequent hand washing with ordinary liquid soap, and air purification and humidification reduce the incidence of contracting the flu. Adequate sleep, stress reduction, and cardiovascular and weight-bearing exercises are also essential for optimal immune function.
A diet low in protein, fresh fruits and vegetables, and omega-3, and high in refined carbohydrates, and trans and saturated fats, impairs a robust immune response and delays recovery from respiratory infections.
Your mother should consider taking a high quality multivitamin and mineral supplement that contains 15 to 20 mg of zinc and 200 mcg of selenium dosed two to three times a day. Additionally, 1,000 IU of vitamin D daily throughout the winter is recommended; consult with your doctor about checking vitamin D levels first. Vitamin C (1,500 to 3,000 mg daily) has been shown to reduce the incidence of respiratory tract infections.
Elderberry extract possesses antiviral properties, but there is insufficient data regarding its effectiveness in preventing type A influenza, the severest and most common form of the flu.
Zinc lozenges (zinc gluconate plus glycine) have been shown to help with cough, sore throat, hoarseness, headache, and nasal congestion but don’t relieve fever or muscle ache with the flu.
Echinacea purpurea is likely to reduce the severity of most symptoms and shorten the duration of viral respiratory infections.
Keeping warm, well rested, and hydrated will speed up recovery. |
