Hybrid Cars
by author Justin Pritchard

You’ve likely heard about the latest hybrid vehicles making their way onto dealer lots. These green machines are a popular option for environmentally conscious drivers wanting to do their part to lower vehicular emissions, and you’re going to be hearing more about them.

Automotive-related pollution and fuel consumption are on the minds of the masses, and hybrid vehicles offer significant improvements in these areas compared to a standard automobile.

Fleet of Choices

Most families can’t do without a car, but there are plenty of impact-minimizing options. The green-car market is replete with more selections that involve less sacrifice than ever before. New-car shoppers can even select hybrid versions of their favourite conventional models.

In most cases, a hybrid system is simply an option available on an existing model, as opposed to an entirely different vehicle. This means it is as familiar, functional, and as easy to live with as any other car.

Hybrid Mechanics

These eco-warriors work by attaching an electric motor and battery to a conventional gasoline engine under the hood. As such, the vehicle can be driven normally by the gas engine, or by electricity, depending on the situation.

The gas engine is needed for most situations because it generates the most power for merging, passing, or cruising at highway speeds. It makes sure the vehicle doesn’t suffer in the performance department.

The electric motor is powered by a battery pack located behind the rear seats or in the floor of the car. This electric motor isn’t as powerful as the gas engine, so it can only drive the vehicle at speeds of up to about 60 kilometres per hour and during very slow acceleration. The gas engine in many hybrids will turn off completely while the car is in a drive-through or a parking lot, or when it is slowly cruising through a residential zone.

Smooth Operator

In these situations, the vehicle is propelled along solely by electricity, making no noise, using no fuel, and creating no exhaust emissions. It’s a magical experience. The gas engine also turns off when the vehicle stops for a red light or stop sign. This allows drivers to cut needless idling and pollution from their commute and it boosts mileage as well. Remember, an idling car gets zero miles per gallon!

When the gas engine switches off, accessories and vehicle functions continue to operate off the battery pack. This is recharged automatically by a generator that’s driven by the gas engine, so there’s never any need to plug the vehicle in when you get home.

Savings–Energy and Dollars

The transition between electric and gasoline driving is handled automatically by a computer system, and it all happens very smoothly and with no driver input required. Over the course of a driver’s day, fuel-free moments add up to benefit owners’ pocketbooks, as well as Mother Nature.

The end result? Depending on your driving style and locale, a hybrid vehicle can save 30 percent or more on your weekly fuel bill and prevent a similarly significant amount of pollution from winding up in the atmosphere.

Long story short, hybrids are all about environmental benefits without sacrifice in usability compared to a conventional vehicle. With the level of choice and effectiveness offered, there’s never been a better time to upgrade to a greener drive.

Go for a Green Test Drive

There are plenty of green car choices on the market. Check out your local auto dealer and try out one of the following vehicles, all available with a hybrid drive system:

  • Toyota Prius
  • Honda Civic Hybrid
  • Nissan Altima
  • Toyota Camry Hybrid
  • Chevrolet Malibu

The Real Story of Alberta Oil Industry Pollution
My parents, Robert and Ethel Kerns, bought a farm in 1946 that is located outside a little town called Wimborne in Central Alberta. About 1967, Mom started raising purebred Arabian horses. Our first devastating experience with the gas/oil industry was the sulphur plant about five kilometres east of the farm.
Chemtrails Secret Confirmed
It started in the winter of 1998. Sky-obscuring "chemtrails" have been observed by thousands of eyewitnesses--including pilots, police officers and former military personnel--over Canada, the USA, Britain, Australia and allied European nations.
Breathe Easy, Take Antioxidants
Antioxidant supplements may improve lung damage caused by ozone, reports James M. Samet, PhD of the US Environmental Protection Agency's National Health and Environmental Effects Research Lab in North Carolina.
Air Apparent
A new generation of children with asthma calls for natural treatments. It is tragically common these days to see children-and adults-puffing onsmall blue puffers or wheezing for breath during exercise. Natural health supplements and herbs are simple nutritional additions to the diet that can help.
Your Detox-Product Shopping List
From the car fumes we breathe to the pesticide residues on our foods, toxic contaminants are, sadly, a daily reality. Your local health food store is your best source of the wide range of natural foods, herbs, and supplements needed to support natural detoxification.
Reinventing the Wheel
New hybrid cars and alternative fuels could make our love affair with the car a little less dirty. With gas prices soaring, oil reserves shrinking, and our climate heating up, we all need ways to cut consumption and clean up our act.
Fuel for Thought
It can be made out of food crops or the oil that cooked your lunch. It can power cars and cut pollution, and no one has to go to war to get it. It's called "biofuel. Compared to gasoline or pure diesel, biofuels produce less carbon dioxide, the main chemical responsible for global warming.
Rude Crude
We know that engine oil depletes fossil fuels and, if disposed of improperly, kills wildlife and pollutes water. Both synthetic and regular oil are petroleum products derived from fossil fuel. Both have to be drained, disposed of, and replaced. How do we evaluate oil companies' claims that we could cause less pollution if we switched from regular engine oil to synthetic oil?
Chevron Flunks At Safety
Last year, Chevron's refinery in Vancouver, BC had six serious incidents ranging from an explosion which injured at least two workers, to the release of potentially toxic gases into the atmospher.
Fuel-Cell Future Less Grey
It's smog, not fog surrounding six of the world's most air polluted cities: Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Cairo, New Delhi, Shanghai and Beijing. But that could change with the introduction of 46 fuel-cell powered buses that would provide urban transportation and clean the air by cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions.
Going Carless
The love of my life is the 1969 Toyota Corolla that I bought in high school and have driven ever since. For 16 years Putt-Putt has served me faithfully through life's triumphs and disappointments. Finally, though, he needs a serious fix-up and we're facing a sobering question.
Fuelling a Revolution
With a climate-change crisis and depleting oil reserves, the world is facing a period of great uncertainty and potential upheaval.
Car Sharing Co-operatives
They walk among us. They're our friends, our co-workers, our corner store owners. Undetectable by sight, they look just like you and me. They are people who don't own cars.
Diesel Danger
Dutch researchers may have found a chemical link between diesel fumes and altered brain activity.
Petro Problems in Cowboy Country
When it comes to mega-profits from mega-oil, the province of Alberta was not careful enough about what it wished for. What it has been granted, along with the riches, is a nightmarish mess of pollution that it has not begun to address.
Dry Cleaning Resolution
Have you made any eco-conscious New Year's resolutions? In 2009 why not resolve to choose a green dry cleaner? While Environment Canada has regulated the phasing out of wasteful, old-generation washing machines and the reduction of toxic dry cleaning emissions, the department has not yet assessed the success of its regulations.
Green Motoring
Perhaps you’re not currently interested in a new car. If that’s the case, some simple tips and advice will help keep your older model from using excessive fuel and emitting excessive pollution.
