The BC government offered free vaccines to 20,000 youth in Abbotsford this summer following an outbreak of meningitis C that hit seven youths and caused two deaths. Similarly, the Quebec government offered meningococcus C shots to one million youth to deal with the outbreak in that province. However, vaccination is likely to cause more harm than good since meningococci disease is rare and vaccine-induced diabetes is common, according to J. Bart Classen, MD, formerly with the US Centers for Disease Control and now head of Classen Immunotherapies in Baltimore, Maryland. Vaccination will substitute one problem for an even greater one, including the lifetime cost of maintaining an increased diabetic population, he said.
